What Is Multi-Engine Time Building?

Multi-engine time building is when a pilot logs flight hours in an aircraft with more than one engine. It’s typically part of the process for pilots who:

  • Are working toward a Multi-Engine Rating

  • Need to meet airline or commercial hour requirements

  • Want to boost their resume for regional or major airline hiring

Why It’s Important

Airlines and commercial employers often require a certain amount of multi-engine flight time. That's because:

  • Multi-engine aircraft fly differently than single-engine ones, especially in emergencies.

  • You learn advanced systems (like retractable gear, complex fuel management, etc.)

  • It shows you're comfortable with higher-performance aircraft.

What It Typically Involves

Here’s what students or time-builders usually do:

Flying with an Instructor (Initial Training)

  • If you don’t already have a Multi-Engine Rating, you'll first train with a CFI-ME (Certified Flight Instructor – Multi-Engine).

  • You'll practice:

    • Engine-out procedures (single-engine operation)

    • Takeoffs and landings

    • Flight maneuvers

    • System management

Time Building Flights (Post-Rating)

  • Once rated, you’ll often rent the aircraft solo or with another rated pilot.

  • Flights may include:

    • Cross-country flights

    • Night time

    • Instrument flying (if applicable)

    • Simulated engine failures

Who Usually Does It?
  • Aspiring commercial pilots

  • Future flight instructors wanting to offer multi-engine training

  • Pilots transitioning into corporate or charter aviation

  • Those preparing for airline applications
